question regarding sodium as a marker

Hello,
I am currently preparing for an exam in renal disorders and am looking for a succinct answer regarding why sodium is a poor marker for determining volume status. From what I understand, serum sodium can be elevated in situations where fluid volume is normal, and vice versa. Any thoughts, or am I on the wrong track?
