Cholesterol testing and followup

Given the high incidence of cardiac mortality in our patients we need to rule out or prevent as many cardiac risk factors. Cholesterol is one of these. Our unit is having a problem screening for cholesterol as to get a true picture it needs to be a fasting level. How are other units handling this for the 2nd and 3rd hemodialysis shifts? We have tried sending them to external labs in the a.m. but tracking down the results is very time consuming. Any opinions?
