"What is so different with Dialysis Patients Medications?"

By Lisa Sever <lsever@yorkcentral.on.ca>, B.Sc.Phm., Nephrology Pharmacist, York Region Dialysis Program, York Central Hospital, Richmond Hill, Ontario.

This presentation was prepared to help educate community pharmacists about kidney disease and the impact it has on medication therapy. It is designed to first tell your audience about your program, discuss treatment modalities, and signs and symptoms of chronic renal failure. A self-assessment quiz is then taken by the audience, before proceeding into case based scenarios, mostly involving OTC problems and dosing guidelines. This is followed by having the audience do a medication timetable for a patient so they can appreciate how taking all of the medications with respect to proper indication, dialysis, drug interactions is quite challenging. The final part includes specific aspects for community pharmacists (i.e. auxiliary labels, role etc).

At the very end, I had them redo the self-assessment quiz. I asked if anyone had to change any answers (everyone did!). We took up the quiz. This was a very well received presentation. I encourage you all to use it or derive your own to help educate the community pharmacists involved in our dialysis patients.
